Welcome to the Staffing Management Association of Charlotte

We are a professional society focused on human resources issues. While originally focused in the areas of employment, recruitment, and staffing, we have expanded our scope to welcome you to a more intimate, face to face opportunity for networking, professional development and personal growth. The topics we present cover a wide range from helping you to excel at what you do to how your team functions to legal and legislative updates. We welcome participation of individuals from corporate, academic, and governmental human resource management roles, as well as providers of the all-important support services such as recruitment advertising, search, benefits, HR systems, and others. We also welcome our colleagues who are in career transition and seeking opportunities to network with their peers. Because we are a smaller group, the networking is more intimate and you also have the opportunity to interact with the speakers before, during and after their presentation.

Who we are

A special interest group of the Charlotte Area SHRM (CASHRM), the Staffing Management Association or SMA (formally known as the Employment Management Association / EMA) was founded in 1979 in Massachusetts as a national human resources society providing professional development and networking opportunities focused primarily on employment and staffing issues. From a small cadre of founders representing such companies as Celanese Corporation, Raytheon and Texas Instruments, the organization grew to nearly 1500 members, representing a broad cross-section of human resources managers in industry, government and academia, as well as providers of support services such as executive search, recruitment advertising, HR systems and many others.

SMA combined with its larger competitor, SHRM, in the early 1990s as a separate affiliated group.  In 2003, SMA was fully integrated with SHRM so that all members could take advantage of the specialized content once available only to members.  Through the SMA Forum and local groups, SMA continues its original objective to be a major voice and resource on staffing and employment issues, trends and solutions.

Operating under the charter and managed by the Board of Directors of CASHRM, SMA™ Charlotte is an independently functioning group with a separate focus. Together with CASHRM, SMA™ Charlotte's goal is to support and advance the human resources profession. While there is no annual membership requirement to participate in SMA™ Charlotte, we request that participants come with the intent of learning and for networking with other HR professionals.
