Chapter History

The Charlotte Area Society for Human Resource Management (CASHRM) had its humble beginnings in the fall of 1942. At that time, four personnel directors began meeting for lunch once or twice a month to share ideas and discuss common problems in the field of personnel and labor relations.

Since each of the discussions was fruitful and served their purpose so well, this felt that others would also benefit. They began thinking of broadening the participation and organizing a personnel director's association. In the fall of 1943, the Charlotte Personnel Directors' Association, "CPDA", was formally organized with a constitution and a small membership of ten men and women from the Charlotte area.

From 1943 through 1963, the Association grew to 55 members, while adhering to its original set of objectives: the discussion, research and exchange of ideas pertaining to personnel, industrial relations, or labor relations. Membership was generally limited to personnel directors.  In 1964, CPDA sought local chapter affiliation with the American Society for Personnel Administration (now the Society for Human Resource Management). To reflect the change in membership requirements, the Association changed its name to Charlotte Area Personnel Association "CAPA". With the change in membership requirements, CAPA saw remarkable growth in the 1970's and 1980's.

Through the 1990's, CAPA continued to grow as an organization. With the addition of a webpage in 1999, CAPA was online. Members and guests benefited from accessing information from the webpage. The membership also voted at the 1999 November membership meeting to adopt a change in by-laws to allow associate memberships for professional HR consultants beginning in 2000. That year the membership grew to 300 members.

Charlotte Area SHRM

In January 2002, CAPA once again changed its name, this time to Charlotte Area Society for Human Resource Management- "CASHRM" - to "brand" the organization as the premier human resource management affiliate in the Charlotte area. Exciting plans for the future included expanding webpage capabilities including online meeting registration. That goal was accomplished shortly thereafter.

The goals and objectives of CASHRM continue to include networking, promotion of SHRM, sponsoring current issues seminars, supporting the student chapters of SHRM, promoting the human resources profession, and maintaining the high ethical standards of the profession. CASHRM continues to make the communities we live in and the organizations we serve better places as a result of our combined efforts in the practice and promotion of the human resources professional.

Rowan County HRA

The Rowan County Human Resources Association (RCHRA) was started in Rowan County in the mid 1970s as the Salisbury-Rowan Personnel Association.  Area personnel managers recognized a need to network and develop professional learning opportunities among thier peers.  The Society for Human Resource Management conferred chapter status on RCHRA in April 2005.  In September 2011, rather than risk losing ists affiliation with SHRM (due to marked decrease in membership) RCHRA sought the assistance of a larger chapter. CASHRM "adopted" RCHRA as what was then called a "satellite" chapter. Now called a Member Service Area (MSA), RCHRA. RCHRA continues its mission to support the needs of the human resource management professional in the Salisbury/Rowan County area through available resources and educational meetings, and to further support the community through the continued development and awareness of the human resource profession.
